Ambrose Wins Race Two at Phillip Island
Marcos Ambrose has won race two of the 2005 V8 Supercar championship’s Grand Finale at Phillip Island, but his Stone Brothers Racing teammate Russell Ingall is headed for his maiden title.
Ingall’s fifth placing and the 56 points he picked up take him to 1866 points overall, meaning only Team Betta Electrical’s Craig Lowndes, who won Saturday’s first race and now has 1829 points, can prevent Ingall being crowned champion.
Even if Lowndes wins Sunday’s final race, Ingall would need to finish no worse than 19th to wrap up the title.
Two-time defending series champion Ambrose clocked 51 minutes and 45.7816 seconds in his Pirtek Racing Falcon, with a fastest lap of 1:34.3861, but with 1792 points and a 74-point deficit, his title charge is over ahead of his move to the United States next year.
Ambrose beat home HSV Dealer Team Holden driver Garth Tander (51:52.1387) by more than six seconds, while Lowndes (52:03.0595) was more than 10 seconds further adrift in crossing the line third in his Falcon.
Tander’s teammate Rick Kelly (52:05.7323) came home fourth, with Ingall (52:05.8683) of Caltex Racing fifth as he moved a step closer to the title, while Steve Ellery was sixth in the second Team Betta Electrial Ford and the Commodores of Greg Murphy, Paul Radisich, Paul Weel and Mark Skaife filled the top 10.
