Ambrose Taking Mate to States and NASCAR
V8 SUPERCAR graduate Marcos Ambrose will fly to the US tomorrow to set up a new life for himself and his Warrnambool mate Ryan Brodie.
Ambrose has secured a drive in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Brodie, his personal assistant for the past four years, will fly over to join him in the new year.
Yesterday Brodie said it was an exciting opportunity that would hopefully lead to a long career following the glamour NASCAR series around the country.
“Driving his Winnebago will be my main responsibility,” he said. “We’ll be based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the series goes as far as California speedway. That will be like driving from Sydney to Perth. It’s a big trip.
“It will be great driving around the country … and going to Daytona, I mean, that’s the Bathurst of America.” “If everything goes well over there it will become my home. Things are looking good at the moment.”
Ambrose, a two-time Australian V8 Supercar champion, will pilot a Wood Brothers/JTG Racing ute in the truck series, which is a stepping stone to the NASCAR main category.
Brodie said the trucks clocked speeds up to 304kmh which was about 10kmh faster than the more aerodynamic and race-friendly Australian V8s Ambrose was used to.
He said he met Ambrose years ago when he first started racing and they struck up a friendship.
“Since then he’s been down here to Warrnambool for a visit,” he said. “He flies out on Wednesday to set a few things up. His wife and baby daughter aren’t going yet.
“I think he’s home again on December 20 for Christmas and then he’ll go back for pre-season testing at Daytona on January 1.
“The first race isn’t until February. I’m ready to go when he says to,” he said.
