Dakar Claims the Life of Aussie Motorcyclist
The infamous Dakar Rally has claimed another life with Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott killed in a fall in the ninth stage of the race on Monday.
Fans from all over the world have been logging onto the ABC’s South Australia site to pay tribute to Andy Caldecott.
You can pay your own tribute via the ABC’s South Australia Backyard site, which also has an extensive archive of stories and interviews with Andy going back to his 2004 Dakar campaign.
In a reminder that the race has often been visited by tragedy, there’s an interview with Andy from 2005 where he describes the “morbid” mood on the race after the death of Italian rider Fabrizio Meoni.
The news from Mauritania overnight will have deeply affected many people in Andy’s home community of Keith, where the four-time Australian Safari winner was something of a local hero.
Condolences to Andy’s family, including his wife and young daughter, and friends. (SOURCE: The Sports Desk)
