Australian Team Wins F1 In Schools World Final

A team from the Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia won the F1 In Schools World Final that took place last weekend during the Autosport International Show at UK’s national Exhibition Center in Birmingham.

The Trinity Grammar School team of Lachlan Nunn, aged 13; Alexander Nunn, 14; Douglas Lucas, 13; and Matthew Nirenberg, 14 emerged victorious from the 16 finalists from 11 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, the UK and the United States. Each member of the winning team was presented with a three-year scholarship to study Motorsport and Automotive Engineering at City University in London.

The competition for 11-to-18-year-olds requires team members to design and race model carbon dioxide-powered Formula One cars made from balsa wood. The event judges also award points for the teams verbal presentation on how they designed their car. The Trinity Grammar School team demonstrated how they had visited Hawker de Havilland in Australia to study aircraft wing design, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to study how the expulsion of carbon dioxide gas in the fractions of a second after launch affected the car’s aerodynamics.
