Davey Ray Wins Australian Speedcar Championship
Davey Ray of Davenport, Iowa took the high honors for Team USA last night in Australia’s biggest event of the year. Ray and the Buckley/Hawk team scored the 65th Australian Speedcar Championship at Parramatta City Raceway.
The two day event came to a conclusion with the 40-lap feature that saw great dicing between Ray, Jerry Coons, Jr., and Adam Clarke. Starting from the eighth position, Ray climbed to second and swapped the lead with Jerry Coons, Jr. several times throughout the event. With two laps to go, Ray used lapped traffic to his advantage and made the pass on Coons for the win.
“This is so great! All the guys have worked so hard. It feels real good to get a win like this for the team,” said a very happy Ray in victory lane.
“Jerry Coons got caught up a bit in lapped traffic. Running second, I could size him up and all the lapped cars. I knew when he went high, I needed to get to the bottom,” said Ray about the race winning move with two to go.
The Aggressor Chassis #2 was rushed by team members and fans in victory lane after the exciting race. Ray showed off his signature Irish heel-click, leap from the roll cage to join in the celebration. The Australian title was the first for Ray and car owner Bill Buckley and the second big win for Hawk Engine Development in the past month.
