Five Spectators Injured in Rally Crash
AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Five spectators were hospitalized Sunday, three with serious injuries, after being struck by a rally car which took a wrong turn and rolled.
A Motorsport New Zealand spokesman said the spectators were watching a Targa Club Rally stage at Waiuku, southwest of Auckland, when the accident occurred.
“He had made a mistake,” Motorsport New Zealand president Stephen Kennedy told National Radio. “He had misheard an instruction and gone the wrong way. So it would appear to be a driver error in this case.”
