Button Unhappy with “Chinese Menu”
After blitzing the field and scoring his first pole of the year, Honda’s Jenson Button was looking forward to ordering up something from Shanghai’s “column A,” a race win.
His Honda V8 wasn’t cooperative and on lap 56 of the 57 lap event - and while in fifth place - Button was served something from “column E,” as in massive engine Explosion that relegated him to a non-points paying 10th place for his RA106 Honda.
With the exception of race winner Alonso and runner-up Raikkonen, who didn’t seem to suffer any ill effects, the rest of the field was compromised by 4 safety car periods.
Montoya continued his miserable season by spinning on the parade lap and Fisichella stalled on the grid. Klien, Massa and Rosberg all got together on lap one that dictated the first safety car for debris dropped from Klien’s car.
Super Aguri’s Ide spent the first 7 laps playing rolling chacaine for Monteiro’s Midland Toyota forcing him to pit on lap 8 in an effort to clear Ide. His teammate Sato performed the same for a string of faster cars attempting to clear the obviously slower Super Aguri.
Ferrari? When was the last time both team cars went out of a GP after being involved in accidents? Nuff said.
A fair indication of how frantic the event was is Scott Speed snatching a single point for Scuderia Toro Roso in the Championship by finishing eighth.
