Mixed Results for A1GP Drivers at Monaco
The world-renowned Monaco street circuit hosted seven A1 drivers last weekend, as both GP2 and World Series by Renault visited one of the most glamorous venues on the motorsport calendar.
A1 Team Portugal driver, Alvaro Parente, scored his first points in the World Series by Renault championship finishing in sixth place just 0.6 seconds behind fellow A1 driver Hayanari Shimoda of A1 Team Japan. ‘I really enjoyed the race in Monaco. It’s quite difficult to overtake here, especially when the speed of all the cars is quite similar. I lost a place at the start and since then, I tried to pick up the pace but it was impossible to do better,’ said Parente.
A1 Team Great Britain’s, Robbie Kerr was rewarded with another four points as he claimed his second top-ten finish of the World Series season, climbing from a thirteenth place start to a seventh place finish. Sean McIntosh of A1 Team Canada just missed out on opening his points account, finishing in twelfth place after picking up a handful of places on the first corner.
While the entire field made it through the first corner in the World Series race, it was a different story for GP2. An incident on the first corner saw A1 Team France driver Nicolas Lapierre crash out of the race, an incident in which he sustained a back injury that is likely to rule him out of the next round of the championship at Silverstone in the UK.
Fellow A1 Team France driver Alexandre Premat went on to take third place with some impressive overtaking manoeuvres while A1 Team Malaysia’s Fairuz Fauzy finished tenth.
