Date Conflict Axes V8’s From GP Weekend

The V8 Supercars will not be part of the Australian Grand Prix next year due to a date clash. V8 Supercars have traditionally raced at the Formula One Grand Prix as the premier support category.

However, the Grand Prix will take place on March 15-18 next year and V8 Supercars Australia CEO Wayne Cattach said they had been expecting the event to be on the week before.

“There is a clash of dates in that we are planning a Championship round the following weekend in Perth,” he said.

“It is physically impossible for our teams to compete at the Grand Prix and turn around just a few days later in Perth.”

The Grand Prix is a non-Championship event for the V8 Supercars and does not count for Championship points.

“Our first priority is to the regular Championship season, our teams and the host broadcaster,” Cattach said.

“We were very surprised that the date they chose clashes with the World Swimming Championships, which also makes it very hard to secure accommodation on that weekend.”

“We are disappointed that we won’t be attending and have notified Tim Bamford from the Grand Prix Corporation who was surprised but accepting of our decision.” (via xtraMSN)
