Winslow Awarded for Act of Bravery
James Winslow, the Asian Formula Three champion, has been presented with a Gregor Grant trophy at the Autosport Awards, in recognition of his bravery in saving the life of one of his competitors.
The Briton saved rival Moreno Soeprapto after pulling him from his wrecked car at Sentul in Indonesia earlier this year, just moments before it was engulfed in flames.
Soeprapto ran into the back of then-leader Winslow and barrel rolled into the barriers, where his car started catching fire. Winslow ran to his aid and pulled the driver clear, moments before it erupted into a fireball.
After being presented with his award by Murray Walker and Derek Warwick, Winslow said: “I didn’t get much chance to think about it, it came quickly. I am just thankful that he was okay.”
“He drove the car I drove the last season, so when I got there I managed to turn off the fuel pump. That gave us a lot of time.”
After helping out Soeprapto, Winslow managed to get his car back on track to take the restart.
“A few hours later we got the car repaired, took pole position and then won the race. It was a great day for me.”
