Kayne Scott takes NZV8 lead

Defending champion Kayne Scott has taken over at the top of the NZV8 leaderboard after John McIntyre suffered a poor weekend at Manfield.

The Ford driver was frustrated by mechanical problems and although he managed a third and a fourth, he was unable to finish higher than 12th in the reverse grid despite a determined drive.

Scott, in the Fujitsu Holden, also had a third and a fourth, but added a second place to ensure his points haul topped McIntyre’s. This gave Scott the series lead for the first time this season.

The other ’star’ driver this weekend was Auckland-based Angus Fogg, the Ford driver delivering two fine wins in the first two races.

Fogg’s second win on Sunday morning was a classic lesson on how to lead virtually from start to finish.

The ‘drive of the weekend’ award had to go to Clark Proctor. Coming into this round the former stockcar champion was holding a strong fifth place on the points’ table. Hampered by a broken hand, Proctor did well to finish 17th in Saturday’s 12-lapper. In Sunday’s first race, an uncharacteristically ill-judged manoeuvre by Australian Cameron McLean sent Proctor spinning down the start-finish straight. Proctor, amazingly, was able to keep the car off the walls on either side and away from following cars, managing to regain the circuit and continue through to finish 17th.

Three-time champion Mark Pedersen took the reverse grid third race ahead of Proctor.

The NZV8s head to the South Island at the beginning of March with two rounds one weekend after the other at Timaru and Teretonga.
