Alex Yoong Wins A1GP Sprint Race

Alex Yoong followed up his dominant qualifying display with a straightforward win in the A1GP sprint race in Mexico City.

The Team Malaysia driver led from the rolling start through to the finish, with only Team Great Britain driver Oliver Jarvis managing to stay anywhere near him. But even Jarvis was never close enough to threaten him, and Yoong duly notched up his third race win of an up-and-down season.

Several of the other main contenders were eliminated in a scary accident that took place on the run from the start to the first corner. Second row men Salvador Duran (Team Mexico) and Bruno Junqueira (Team Brazil) tangled and Team Germany’s Christian Vietoris was caught up in the ensuing melee.

Whilst only Vietoris was out on the spot, the other two cars were damaged and effectively out of contention.

The debris from the crash remained on the circuit throughout the race, and this accounted for the early retirement of Alvaro Parente (Team Portugal), who ran over it and picked up a puncture.

With Team France driver Jean-Karl Vernay spinning in an early battle with Team Australia’s Ian Dyk, the Aussie car was promoted to a third place he would never lose.

Behind him, Adrian Zaugg (Team South Africa) just managed to ward off a late attack from Jonathan Summerton (Team USA).

Dyk is expected to start the afternoon feature race despite a bizarre post-race accident. The newcomer twisted an ankle after jumping a wall between his car and the podium, and is spending the interval receiving hospital attention.
