Australian V8 Supercars Look to NASCAR for Future Model

In the next few years it is possible V8 Supercars will move in the same direction as Nascar has.

To put racing back into the hands of Nascar drivers, the governing body introduced the “Car of Today” which has standardised parts, simpler design specs and centralised purchasing.

Not only does this take some of the dark arts away from engineers, it reduces the overall cost of racing.

What might also help race teams would be the introduction of more composite panels to speed up repairs and construction times.

V8 Supercars already use a composite front-quarter panel, and the front splitters are either made from carbon fibre or Kevlar. However it’s believed other composite parts are being considered.

Currently the Commodore VE needs a cut-and-shunt to meet the wheelbase rules. There are concerns that the next generation BG Ford may have to do the same.

“We will probably start to think about this whole idea of the car of the future in a similar way to Nascar,” said V8 Supercar Australia CEO Wayne Cattach. “I’m getting ahead of myself in saying that, but I think it’s timely for us to have a more holistic look at the cars.”

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    THEY CANT LOOK LIKE NASCAR!!!
NASCAR IS THE WORST RACING IN THE WORLD

  2. So, it’s a bad think for the V8’s to look to copy safety features from NASCAR?

Excuse me, but…. you’re an idiot.

  3. been following nascar since 1968. i think the focus on safety has crippled the sport. been following V8 supercars since 2002. in their current form, i think the V8 supercar series is FAR more entertaining. too bad speed dropped V8 supercar coverage here in the US.

  4. So, Paul, just how much should be focused on safety? Do you have some level of injuries or deaths per year that should be used to gauge it?

As far as NASCAR being “crippled,” pah-lease! Over-blown rhetoric will get you nowhere around here.

  5. Introducing the COT has made it easier for certain teams to start to dominate the sport and has made it less exciting in my opinion. I agree that safety has taken something away from it.

V8 Supercars is ok as it is for the time being and if they follow NASCAR it will be less exciting.

Marc - can you post a reply that does more than just disagreeing with whatever the poster before has written?

  6. Paul UK…. can you post something that actually go a ways to prove your contention it’s now easier for some teams to dominate?

Or are you just full of entry rhetoric?

NASCAR’s history is littered with dominate teams, no better example is the once great Petty Enterprises.

Furthuremore, the teams that “dominated” during the pre-CoT season are still at the same level of accomplishment as after its introduction.

You made the claim, show me.
