Oran Park: Need for Speed Event
Richie Rappa has dominated the inaugural Aussie Racing Cars Need For Speed event at Oran Park on the weekend, while TV personalities got a taste of the Aussie Racing Cars action themselves.
With almost 30 cars entered for the non-Series event it was pride that was on the line as the ‘pocket rockets’ took the short circuit by storm.
TV personalities, RPM’s Greg Rust, and Seven’s Daniel Gibson and Grant Denyer, took up the invitation to find out why everyone who drives an Aussie Racing Car ends up falling in love with the category. They were not disappointed with the speed, handling and the experience of pushing the cars to their limits with smiles all-round each time they climbed from the cars.
For the regular competitors the meeting was decided on a mixture of finishing positions and lap times with the top 18 competing in a reverse-grid shoot-out to decide the overall winner.
It was Rappa who carved his way to the front of the field in a performance that is become regular for the young Sydneysider. Darren Chamberlin made his way to the podium for the first time with second place and Kyle Clews finished third.
Rappa also claimed fastest lap of the meeting.
In addition to the Aussie Racing Cars there were street car sessions and the Piccolo Scuderia F3 driven by Justin Tate making the most of the circuit.
The meeting also included the launch of Australia’s newest motor racing concept, NASCUP, a category based on a scaled down version of America’s NASCAR.
Similar to the Aussie Racing Cars concept the NASCUP runs a water-cooled version of the Yamaha 1200 motorcycle engine and is sure to give competitors looking for an entry-level way into motorsport the perfect tool for the job.
