Rob Huff Wins Wreck-Filled Second Macau WTCC Race
Rob Huff was handed victory in the second World Touring Car Championship race at Macau on Sunday after a chaotic final two laps where three leaders crashed out.
N.Technology’s James Thompson appeared to have the race in the bag, having got away cleanly from pole position to lead the field down the long stretch into Lisboa Bend.
Behind him, his task was eased slightly by Chevrolet’s Nicola Larini muscling his way up to second after jumping the start from ninth on the grid.
Larini had to come in at the end of the first lap for a drive-through penalty, which allowed Farfus, who had made a good run up from fourth to second, to start pushing Thompson.
Despite several attempts, the Brazilian could not find a way past and Thompson was given a chance to break away when Farfus and Tarquini touched exiting Lisboa.
However, Thompson clouted the wall through the Solitude Esses on the penultimate and badly damaged his car.
That handed the lead to Farfus, who then crashed out on the final lap - handing the lead briefly to Gabriele Tarquini. But the Italian ran over a wheel that had been knocked off Farfus’s car in his accident, damaging his car and slowing him.
That chaos allowed Huff to come through to grab a surprise victory - Chevrolet’s second of the day - from newly-crowned champion Yvan Muller and outgoing champion Andy Priaulx.
